How to Start Playing

Welcome We are delighted that you are interested in finding out how to start playing the exciting sport of polocrosse.

Where to Start There are a number of ways you can get in to the game, but the best way is to contact your local UKPA affiliated club and speak with them.  Details of clubs and contacts can be found on the Clubs page.  To find out more about the game have a look at our What is it? Page.

Pony Club If you are a member of Pony Club then contact your DC or Chief Instructor or Polocrosse Instructor. If your branch does not yet include the sport then contact Hannah Clack at Pony Club head office (hannah(@) who can put you in touch with your local area polocrosse representative.

Some riding schools also teach polocrosse if you do not have your own horse.

You can also contact the UKPA’s Sport Development Officer (SDO) who will be able to put you in touch with the best person to help you in to the sport.

Equipment Apart from the racquet you probably already have all the necessary equine equipment to pay the sport (assuming you have a horse!) and clubs will be able to lend you a racquet.  You can play the game in a standard riding hat and clothing, but once you get hooked you may want to purchase sport specific items such as white jeans.  Your club will be able to guide you to the best places to buy these from or try Polocrosse Extreme.

Starting Playing Clubs hold regular training events  where you can learn the necessary skills to play the game, but an excellent way to learn is by actually playing the game for real.  There are many tournaments throughout the year, most over two days but some just for the day.  See our Events Page for further details.  There are a number of different divisions in polocrosse aimed to allow even a complete beginner to get in to the game and have a great time.  The Rulebook can be downloaded here, but it may seem a little daunting at first so best to be guided by your club.

Joining the UKPA Once you join your club and the UKPA you will be provided with a Welcome pack that should include all the basic information you need to get involved.  Polocrosse is a very friendly sport and we pride ourselves on looking after new players so if on doubt ask, ask anyone and they will point you in the right direction. Our Membership Page will give you more information on how to join the UKPA including a downloadable membership form.

Want a Demo or some Coaching? If you are looking for someone to come and do a demonstration or to do some coaching for you at your livery yard then either contact your local club or see the Coaching Page for your nearest UKCC Qualified coach.
